Yesterday when I read in the evening on Twitter that Valverde's contract was ended, I was relieved but mainly ashamed. But let me explain.
I am totally aware that the style of play and football in general was a disaster. But as I pointed out in a previous post, quite some time ago, I believe that Valverde was not the main problem. The problem is way deeper. We were used to a golden era under Guardiola with Iniesta, Messi, Xavi,.... After this time was over we had MSN, which softened the loss of Xavi and co. But Valverde was appointed when Neymar left. His reign could not start worse. I know that his tacttics were not great but he was a decent midtable coach. While Barca is not midtable, the performances can not be pushed all on him.
I see the board as the main problem. They want power and money but do not care about the style and our so called Barca-DNA. They were responsible for most of the bad purchases.
I do not want to go to much into detail but Valverde brought 2 La Liga trophys and in both seasons we dominated domestically. The humiliating losses in the Champions League cannot be blamed all on him. In general we won 66% of the games.
But overall I totally agree that he was not good enough to be the manager of the best club in the world. But he did not deserve the hate he received. Being booed and attacked in the news. People making fun of his face and how he is positioned on the sideline. No one deserves to be treated this way and it is disgusting to see adults being so childish.
Furthermore I doubt that Setien is going to make a long term difference. The old problems are still there: old unmotivated spoiled players and a board that only wants money. I also fear that we will end like Madrid a while ago when they fired coach after coach.
I think that Valverde worked the best he could and was treated too badly.
Thank you Ernesto Valverde and best luck in the future.
