Messi and Barcelona stars pay tribute to Diego Maradona

The football world mourns the Argentine legend

The football word is in mourning following the terrible news earlier today that Argentina legend Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60.

Maradona, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, suffered a heart attack at home in Buenos Aires.

The former Argentina captain famously played for Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli during his club career and also inspired his country to victory at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Maradona also led Argentina to the World Cup final in 1990 but was then sent home after testing positive for ephedrine. His personal problems went on to affect the second half of his career and also contributed to health issues.

Lionel Messi and Barcelona have paid tribute to Maradona on social media and been joined by a host of players past and present:

Messi: A very sad day for all Argentines and football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal. I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I send my condolences to all his family and friends.

Carles Puyol: Rest in peace, friend. A very strong hug for your family and for the Argentine people.

Javier Mascherano: Eternally Thanks Diego for everything you gave us !!! Rest in peace. You earned it more than enough.

Gerard Pique: Rest in peace legend
