Sergio Busquets equalled Carles Puyol’s record for Barcelona appearances on Sunday against Levante when he turned out for the Catalan giants for the 593th time.
Only Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta have made more appearances for Barcelona than Busquets and he took to social media with a message detailing his pride at reaching the landmark.
“Last night was a special game for me, equalling a Cule legend like Carles Puyol. It’s a pride to be able to make history and put my name beside the greats of this club. This has been the club of my life and the best in the world. I also want to thank all the people that have made it possible and accompanied me in these games. I am very happy to be the player with the fourth-most games for Barcelona.”
Busquets was expected to face real competition for a starting spot this season from Miralem Pjanic but it hasn’t worked out that way yet. The midfielder has started nine of Barca’s 11 La Liga games and still seems to be first choice alongside Frenkie de Jong.
