Puyol on Messi: We have been lucky to have him at Barcelona

Praise for the captain

Carles Puyol has offered his thoughts on Lionel Messi after seeing the Barcelona captain notch his 644th goal for the club against Real Valladolid.

Messi’s record strike takes him past Pele’s legendary record with Santos and out on his own as the player with the most goals for a single club.

Puyol thinks there’s no doubt Messi will be remembered as the greatest of all time.

“If you ask me who Michael Jordan is, I will say that he is the best basketball player in history. I think Messi will have the same status – the best footballer of all time.

“It is also talked about whether Michael Jordan is the best in history, and these are opinions, and sometimes it is difficult to be objective. It is difficult for a Real Madrid fan to recognize that Messi is the best.

“We have been lucky to have him but I really say, taking away the feeling of being a cule, that the numbers are there, these have not been invented and they show that he is the best.”

Messi will get the chance to extend his record further and score goal No. 645 against Eibar next week in La Liga. The captain bagged four the last time José Luis Mendilibar’s men visited the Camp Nou.
