Oscar Mingueza’s emergence could mean that Barcelona decide against splashing out on a center-back in the January transfer window.
According to Sport, Ronald Koeman is happy with the 21-year-old and has been “encouraged by his performances so far” for the first team.
Barca had been keen to buy a defender and a forward in January but are now said to be “seriously considering” not investing in the defence because of Mingueza’s performances.
The youngster has made three starts since coming in for the injured Gerard Pique and has helped the team pick up clean sheets in every match.
Mingueza’s place may come under threat from Ronald Araujo and Samuel Umtiti shortly, but he may still be needed with Pique not expected back for several months.
Barca continue to be linked with a move for Eric Garcia but with Mingueza’s emergence it may well make more sense to wait until the summer when the Man City man is free.
