Lionel Messi’s Barcelona will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus for what some people are speculating could be their final head-to-head meeting.
While the two have faced off for the title of the sport’s best player over the past decade-and-a-half, they don’t always compete in direct matches. But when they do, the interest around these two megastars elevates what could have been a pedestrian UEFA Champions League group stage match between two teams not doing particularly well this season, into an occasion that gets even casual fans interested.
According to stats from ESPN, this will be the 36th meeting between the two in official matches.
Messi has won 16 of the 35 games already played, compared to Ronaldo’s 10 wins. The 9 remaining were draws. In those, Messi has 22 goals to Ronaldo’s 19. In addition, Messi has given 12 assists, while Ronaldo only one.
The majority of those matches took place while Ronaldo was at Real Madrid, with Messi representing Barcelona. Eighteen of the 35 matches were played in La Liga, with five each taking place in the Spanish Supercup and the Copa del Rey. Five of the 35 matches were in the Champions League, although some of those took place while Ronaldo was at Manchester United. The remaining two were friendlies between Portugal and Argentina.
This will be the first time Ronaldo faces Messi as part of Juventus. He missed the first meeting between the sides this season due to coronavirus protocol.
