Thibaut Courtois has clarified statements he had made earlier which some understood as the keeper claiming his team, Real Madrid, should be crowned champions because they defeated Barcelona, despite trailing in the table.

“It would not be just if Barça were champions because we have drawn against them in one match, and won the other, so we have shown we are better than them,” Courtois had said when asked about the possibility of the Catalans being named champions early.

“At no point did I say that Madrid should be proclaimed champions if La Liga ends early, we are in a better spot even though we lost against Real Betis, and if we played the eleven games that are left, I’m confident that my team could win the league,” the keeper clarified.

Barcelona dropped a point behind Madrid after losing 1-0, but they were back on top of La Liga soon after when Betis defeated los blancos. They are currently two points clear, with eleven games tentatively approved to go ahead after the coronavirus crisis forced a temporary pause to the league.
