Lionel Messi has sent a fax to FC Barcelona telling the club he wants to cancel his contract, according to news first broken by Argentine outlet TyC Sports.

Messi wants to use a clause in his contract that allows him to leave at any point between seasons, although it is expected that there will be negotiations before he actually voids the contract. Why? It is reportedly because the option to leave expired on June 10th, which in normal times would be between seasons. However, due to the coronavirus break, the end of the season actually happened much later.

He will not attend training nor will he attend Barcelona’s coronavirus tests from now on, and the decision is final, according to Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

The news has been confirmed by Diario Olé (Argentina), and Cadena Ser (Spain). And, the club has confirmed receipt of the message according to Catalan radio.

The Barcelona board of directors has reportedly called an urgent meeting to discuss the matter.

Former teammate and longtime club captain, Carles Puyol, sent a message: “Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend.”

There is no word on what kind of legal challenge or negotiation the club will take, or which team would be the most likely to secure the star’s services. Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Milan have been rumored names.
