Sergio Busquets has been talking about Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup final against Athletic and thinks winning the match and lifting a first trophy under Ronald Koeman would be an important step.

The midfielder took part in the pre-match press conference ahead of the game and said his team-mates are motivated for the game and hoping to lift the trophy.

“We are very motivated, very happy to be able to win the first title of the season. It has not been an easy season but the team is getting better and better with more confidence and doing things very well

“Winning this title would be very important for us, I don’t know if the final click. We have been playing very well after the Christmas break. It would be an important step.”

Busquets was also asked about Lionel Messi’s fitness and is hoping the captain will be fit enough to shrug off a leg injury and take his place in the starting XI.

“Hopefully Messi and Dest are there. Leo is the best player in the world, our options would be much bigger if he were. Hopefully it is. The last word will have both him and the medical services and the mister. Let’s see what happens.”

One player who does look set to start is 18-year-old midfielder Pedri and Busquets had a few words of advice for his team-mate.

“What Pedri has to do is to continue showing his level and to continue showing what he has in his locker. It’s early days, he’s been at the club for a little while, but he has brutal talent and a great margin to grow. He has everything to make it happen.”

Pedri was on target when Barcelona beat Athletic 3-2 just over a week again at San Mames with Messi scoring the other two goals in a good win for the visitors.
