Barcelona Women remain perfect in the league season and now have 18 points from the first six games thanks to a dominant 3-0 victory away to Atlético Madrid at the Centro Deportivo Wanda. Barça went to a ground they always struggle and dominated their main title rivals, and are now up to 38 goals in the first six games in the Primera División. What a team.
FIRST HALF
Barça knew they would have to work hard in this one, and Atlético made it difficult from the start with a defensive strategy, marking in a low block with great intensity in their pressing to stop the rhythm of the Blaugrana attack.
Barça dominated possession and remained patient as they tried to look for spaces in the final third, but struggled to create any meaningful chances early on. Their best moments ironically came on the counter, with Aitana Bonmatí hitting the post with a beautiful shot and Mariona Caldentey shooting just wide from outside the box.
Atlético were also dangerous when they had the ball, and Ludmila hit the crossbar in what was the best chance of the first 30 minutes. But after a great individual move by Caroline Graham Hansen, Asisat Oshoala scored the opener and gave Barça the lead. As soon as they scored, the Blaugrana started to truly dominate, eliminating the threat of Atleti’s counter and launching attack after attack.
The halftime whistle came without a second goal, but Barça look hungry to add to their lead and finish the job in the second half.
SECOND HALF
Atlético made a strong start to the second half, sending more bodies forward and pressing higher up the pitch, but it didn’t take long for Barça to regain control of the game and once again be the dominant force in the game.
They still needed goals to confirm the victory, though, and they came in a four-minute span: first it was Aitana who fired a shot from outside the box and found the bottom left corner, then Graham Hansen created some magic on the right wing and played a perfect cross for Lieke Martens to make it 3-0.
Barça simply ran out the clock in the last few minutes, and the final whistle came to confirm a great victory against the second best team in the land. Atlético away is always really tough, but this season’s Barça might just destroy everyone in their path.
