Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman praised captain Lionel Messi after another inspirational performance on Monday against Huesca in La Liga.
The Argentine scored twice and picked up an assist in a 4-1 win that sees Barca cut the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid to four points.
It was a historic night for Messi who equalled Xavi’s record for Barcelona appearances after making his 767th outing for the Catalan giants.
Koeman was full of praise for his captain after the win:
“I think Messi has shown that he is the best. The first goal was fantastic. He deserves so much to be important to this team. Luckily he’s still with us,” he said.
“It’s a very good result to keep growing. We had a good first half and we kept up the intensity in the second. We finally got a goal from a corner. People work hard on set pieces. A great goal for Óscar.”

The Barcelona boss also complained about Rafa Mir’s penalty that made it 2-1 just before half-time and insisted it should not have been awarded.
The penalty was the only real sour note on a good night for Messi and Barcelona.
The captain’s goals also mean he’s hit at least 20 for the 13th straight season in La Liga and see Messi extend his lead in the race for the Pichichi.
