Ronald Koeman spoke to reporters on Tuesday to discuss his team’s Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Barcelona boss offered an update on injuries, insisted his team still believe in a comeback and also shared some thoughts on new president Joan Laporta.
Here are the best bits:
Koeman on PSG
We face it with a very bad result but there’s always hope. It depends on the start, the energy we come out with and how complicated we can make it for our opponents. It’s also about efficiency. They proved very effective in front of goal. We are a team that always goes out for the win and on top of that we always create chances to score. We hope to be optimal in front of goal and nothing is impossible.
Koeman on what’s changed
The cup games have given us a lot of confidence but we can’t compare a 2-0 comeback to a 4-1 at home. Losing 4 -1 at home is a lot more difficult and PSG is a very strong team that aspires to win the Champions League. So the only hope we have to come back is to have the perfect game, be very efficient, but let’s see - we are going to try. Barca is always a team that goes for the win.
Koeman on if injuries in defense make it more tricky
It’s true this season so far we didn’t have all our players available. It’s been difficult but we’ve also demonstrated that we don’t depend on one or two players. The team is strong, the team has proved they can face challenges and that’s what we’ll continue to do tomorrow.
Koeman on if Laporta can help Messi stay
Maybe there are more possibilities, I don’t know yet. It’s true he has history with Leo and other players from this team. It’s pretty positive in that sense. I don’t know if that changes things for Leo. Only Leo can decide his future. Everybody here at Barca hopes he stays. I think he won the elections by a big margin, the members have voted and I think it’s good for the club to have a president like him to work to improve things for the future.
Koeman on Laporta
I know him yes. We’ve met each other in the past a few times. I know Frank Rijkaard very well who was his first coach. He gives a lot of confidence to his players, he’s very much involved in his role to help the coaches and the players. I think so far things have gone well, he exchanged a few words with the staff and players and the mood was good.
Koeman on Araujo
We’ve spoken, we talked to Ronald in the last training sessions and I think maybe we did force his comeback too soon and we don’t want to do that again, make the same mistake. We want him to train with the team and if all goes well he might be available for Monday.
Koeman on the mood at Barca
It’s going to be very complicated to overcome this result. We are playing against PSG, we’re not playing against just any team. We need to play the perfect match, get a good result, hopefully we can aspire to more. We also depend on our opponents. We talk about the players missing, but we have more missing than our rivals
Koeman on if he’ll play 3-5-2
I have a starting XI in my mind. We’ve spoken about it, analyzed the first match, talked with the players. We’ll have a final talk tomorrow but I think with these players we can play any system.
Koeman on possibility of comeback
Of course if we think about coming back we need each and every single player at their very best. If on top of that Leo is able to have one of the best games in his whole career then anything is possible because he is a player who can decide any game in any moment. But I don’t want to give Leo any more pressure, the entire team needs to be at their best and we need the luck factor as well.
