Xavi has been talking about Barcelona and Lionel Messi and feels his former team have failed to take full advantage of having the greatest player in the history of the game at the club.

The Catalan giants have largely disappointed in the Champions League since last lifting the European Cup in 2015 and ended up last season empty-handed for the first time in 12 years.

Messi ended up asking to leave last summer and Xavi has urged his former club to do their best to make the captain happy again at the Camp Nou.

“I’m sorry that we have not taken enough advantage of Messi in recent years. Many times it has made me feel that Leo has not been happy on the pitch and I’m sorry as a culer that we have not taken enough advantage of having the best player of the world and of history,” he said.

“We have make Leo happy because with a happy Leo you have a lot more chances to win titles. That he hasn’t felt happy in what I consider the club of my life makes me sad.”

It’s still not clear what Messi will do next but optimism he will stay has grown as the season has progressed, particularly following the arrival of Joan Laporta as president for a second time and the team’s turnaround in form after a difficult start.
