Accompanied by his sports vice president, Rafa Yuste, the trio spent two-and-a-half hours there before emerging to a media scrum all smiles. The club have played down the importance of the meeting, arguing it was simply one of many the two have shared in the past two months.

They tried to sign him in the last two transfer windows only to be unsuccessful, but now that he’s available on a free transfer all that had to be negotiated was the player himself’s terms and conditions. Lionel Messi’s contract renewal could be set to rumble on for some time according to Mundo Deportivo. Barcelona expect the Argentine to respond to the proposal on the table once the season ends on May 23rd, with the initial idea being that Messi collects half his fee for the next two years as a Barcelona player and makes up the difference in the three years he acts as an ambassador for the club while he plays in the United States.
