Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has given a rare interview to Ole and has spoken about this season’s win over Athletic in the final of the Copa del Rey.
Messi scored twice in the 4-0 victory to lift his first trophy as Barcelona captain and ensure the club did not go without silverware for a second season in a row.
The captain admits is was an important win for the team, particularly because of the amount of young players in the squad.
“The Copa del Rey was special because of the spell we were going through. The club is coming from a couple of years of where we weren’t doing well,” he said.
“It’s a young dressing room, with a lot of new faces. This Copa del Rey win was a turning point for the dressing room and a very important one.”
Messi also spoke about how touched he was after the game when his team-mates were spotted queuing up to have photos taken with the captain and the trophy.
“That was beautiful, to see so many players who come through the ranks, who feel the same. I know what it feels like because I felt the same,” he said. “Or to take the photo with the older players. It was a beautiful moment in every way.”
The interview didn’t offer any real clues as to Messi’s thinking about the future with his contract up next month. The Argentine will miss Barca’s final game of the season on Saturday at Eibar after being given permission to take a break ahead of the Copa America.
