After Georginio Wijnaldum’s last-minute decision to rebuff FC Barcelona, the Catalans are in search of a new midfielder. It is said that a lot of midfielders have been offered to the club, and one of the biggest names is Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek is a teammate of Wijnaldum’s from the Dutch national team and knows Ronald Koeman well. He also knows Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong from the national team and their time together at Ajax.

While that familiarity could help him at the Camp Nou, it is understood the Catalans are poised to reject the offer, even though Van de Beek wants to join.

The reason? He’s the wrong sort of midfielder Barcelona wants. The club is looking for a box-to-box type of player who can help extensively in defense. While Van de Beek can do a little bit of everything, and has good passing and control, it seems Barcelona are looking for another kind of midfielder.

It’s not the first time Van de Beek has been linked with Barcelona. Last year there were rumors he’d join as well, although of course nothing came to pass. He’s said to be unhappy with his role at United, meaning a move could potentially be in the cards - at least some day.

On the other hand, there have been no decisions made and Barcelona still are on the hunt for a midfielder.
