Samuel Umtiti has reportedly been told he’s surplus to requirements at Barcelona and to look for an exit following the return to the club of center-back Eric Garcia on a free transfer.
Garcia’s return means the club now has six senior center-backs on the books ahead of the new season with Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo, Oscar Mingueza, Clement Lenglet, and Umtiti all in the first-team squad.
That’s a lot of defenders and means exits are likely with Umtiti set to be top of the list when it comes to offloading center-backs. Recent reports have claimed the World Cup winner wants to stay and fight for his place but it’s unlikely the club has the same view.
Diario Sport are already reporting that Barca “have told the Frenchman that he is not in their plans and that he should seek a move elsewhere this summer.”
Umtiti made 16 appearances in all competitions last season for Barca but only six of those were as a starter. The defender’s knee problems have seen him slip down the pecking order, and the 27-year-old certainly appears destined to leave.
Yet it’s not as easy as all that. Umtiti commands a huge salary which is likely to put off any admirers. His injury problems may also be of concern, while he’s also contracted to the club until 2023.
