Memphis Depay scored his first goal since signing for Barcelona on Monday as the Netherlands beat North Macedonia 3-0 at Euro 2020.

The forward finished off a slick counter to slot home after 24 minutes to give Frank de Boer’s side the lead at the Amsterdam Arena. The goal was checked by VAR for a potential foul by Daley Blind on Goran Pandev in the build-up but was allowed to stand.

North Macedona did have chances in the first half. Ivan Trichkovski thought he’d opened the scoring after latching onto a pass from Pandev and slotting past Maarten Stekelenberg but it was ruled out for offside.

Another attack saw Aleksander Trajkovski let fly with a fierce shot that flew past Stekelenberg but smashed against the base of the post and out to safety.

The Netherlands made changes at the break with Steven Berghuis and Jurrien Timber coming on for Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij and doubled their lead after 50 minutes with Depay involved again.

The new Barcelona signing raced into the box and picked out Georginio Wijnaldum to tap home from close range to make it 2-0.

Wijnaldum and Depay combined again eight minutes later to put the game out of North Macedonia’s reach. Depay was again sent into the box but saw his shot saved, however Wijnaldum was on hand to net the rebound.

Wout Weghorst almost added a fourth after a neat pass from Frenkie de Jong but his effort flew narrowly over the bar, while North Macedonia had a second goal ruled out for offside after Darko Churlinov beat Stekelenburg following a great pass by Enis Bardhi.

The result means the Netherlands finish top of Group C with maximum points from their three games. The team will now head to Budapest for the round of 16 where they’ll play one of the third-placed teams.
