Memphis Depay is very close to signing a three-year deal with FC Barcelona, and his transfer could be officially announced next week. This is according to Diario SPORT.
The contract between the Dutchman and the Catalan club is considered to be almost done, but Depay is awaiting confirmation that Ronald Koeman will stay as manager before signing on.
Koeman’s continuity is expected to be ratified soon, meaning Depay’s incorporation could follow in the next few days.
The forward would come on a free transfer from Lyon, and his wages are said to be moderate, with many performance-based bonuses. Depay had been linked with Barcelona for a long time. Koeman was always said to have wanted the forward, but he was denied most recently in the winter transfer window as the club still had only an interim president.
Lyon offered him a generous renewal offer, and Juventus reportedly approached him with an offer that paid more than Barcelona’s. But Depay is expected to reject them in favor of joining his former national team manager.
Depay considers Koeman one of his most important mentors. The former Barcelona player helped Depay improve and stuck with him as his starting centerforward even as he went an underwhelming spell at Manchester United. His time in the Premier League was far from a success, but he has recovered his best form in France.
