Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni says Lionel Messi doesn’t need to win the Copa America to go down as the best player ever to play the game.
Messi could lift a first senior international title with Argentina if the Albiceleste beat Brazil in the final on Saturday at the Maracana Stadium.
The Argentine’s failure to win silverware at international level is often used against him, but Scaloni says the 34-year-old has already proved he’s the GOAT.
“Win or lose, he will continue being the best footballer in history, he doesn’t need to win a title to demonstrate it,” he said.
“Obviously, we want to win because we haven’t made all this effort not to break the bubble.
“In the background, whether Leo wins or doesn’t, he has already demonstrated that he is the best in history, and even the opponents recognise it.”
