Sergio Aguero has opened up on Argentina’s Copa America win and says captain Lionel Messi needed the victory more than anyone.
Argentina’s win over Brazil on Saturday ended La Albiceleste’s 28-year wait for a trophy and handed Messi a first senior international trophy.
Messi’s lack of an international title has often been held against him by some critics, and it’s clear from the celebrations just how thrilled the 34-year-old has been to win with Argentina.
Aguero says the title will bring Messi joy and peace and added that the captain’s enjoyment of the win has made the whole squad happy.
“Leo was very excited, he was the one who needed it the most. He had already won many titles, but he knew that a title with the national team would give him that extra joy to be more calm and relaxed. He deserved it. He is very happy, and we realize that his happiness is our happiness,” he said.
“It is a different, incredible happiness. Difficult to explain the feeling. We couldn’t believe it, we were shocked. Until we got to the AFA podium we couldn’t believe it, against Brazil, in Brazil ...”

The two players will now enjoy a break before returning to pre-season training with Aguero set to link up with Messi for the first team at club level after joining the Catalan giants on a free transfer this summer.
