Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that 17-year-old defender Alejandro Balde has signed a new contract at the club that runs until June 2024.
The club have moved to secure the long-term future of the teenager who has been at the club since the age of eight. The youngster reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea before signing his new deal but has opted to continue his career at the Camp Nou.
Here’s Barcelona’s official statement:
“The player Alejandro Balde has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona for the renewal of his contract that will bind him to the club until June 30, 2024 . The player has signed his new contract this Thursday in an event with the president Joan Laporta, the first vice president and head of the sports area Rafael Yuste, the director of training football Joan Soler and the director of training football José Ramón Alexanco at Camp Nou offices. The termination clause will be 500 million euros.”
The club clearly has high hopes for Balde who was in the starting XI on Wednesday for Barcelona’s 4-0 pre-season friendly win over Nastic and could get more minutes on Saturday against Girona.
There have been conflicting rumors about whether Balde will be promoted to the first-team next season, particularly with Junior Firpo having left, but the latest update has suggested he could stay with Barcelona B for now in order to play regularly.
