There are few things more heartbreaking than losing in general in a Euro semifinal. One of those things that happen to be worse is when you lose to a somewhat dodgy penalty decision.
That’s what happened to Denmark this week. An English penalty put them over the top in extra time and there’s certainly been discussion about the validity of the penalty decision.
Barcelona’s own Martin Braithwaite was a key part of Denmark’s run at the Euros, and he chatted a bit about the match and decision after the match.
“We have to swallow that,” he said. “We are proud, but also incredibly disappointed in the way it happened. I don’t think it was entirely fair, but I have to be careful what I say.”
“There is no one to blame, there was no penalty and it was judged a bit harshly. We don’t know if it was because of Maehle or Mathias, but Maehle has been fantastic in this tournament and that’s what everyone will remember.”

Probably smart to keep the emotions in check publicly. Can’t imagine how frustrating that would be.
