Ronald Koeman’s job is to worry about the play on the pitch. So it isn’t surprising that when he looks at his squad he sees obvious gaps.

Lionel Messi is no longer on the team and Sergio Aguero is already hurt. Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati are also still injured, while the midfield is lacking a certain Georginio Wijnaldum that Koeman also wanted.

As a result, Koeman reportedly requested that Barcelona sign a couple of new players. The thought is that he asked for an attacker and midfielder. As a surprise to no one, he was rejected.

Considering Barcelona can’t even register the players they’ve already signed, it makes sense why they wouldn’t want to make themselves look even more dysfunctional. It just means Koeman is going into the season with a team that is a shell of what it was last season. Now we get to see how it all plays out.
