Gerard Pique revealed the three other Barcelona captains, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Sergi Roberto, will follow in his footsteps and reduce their salaries at the club after Sunday’s win over Real Sociedad.

Barca announced before the match Pique had taken a substantial reduction that had allowed the Catalans to register Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia in time for the game.

Pique went on to score Barca’s first goal of the season in a 4-2 win over Real Sociedad and spoke to reporters after the match about the financial situation at the club.

“The goal meant a lot to me. I grew up here, have been player here many years. The gesture is what was required, and the other captains will make their own steps soon,” he said.

“The four captains have been talking to come to an agreement with the club. One has made it official to be able to register the players, but the others are close too, they will make an effort too. Communication is not 100% correct.”

The 34-year-old also spoke about life without Lionel Messi as Barca began a new era on Sunday night following the GOAT’s departure last week.

He added, “Leo is best player in history of this club, of football. But time moves on. We will miss him but we are all together, I’m convinced we will challenge for trophies this season.”

Barca’s win over Real Sociedad was exactly what was needed after a tough week for the club in the wake of Messi’s exit. Ronald Koeman’s men face Basque opposition again next week as they take on Athletic at San Mames.
