Spain boss Luis de la Fuente said his team’s victory over Georgia was the “most bitter” of his career after seeing the win overshadowed by a serious injury to Gavi.

The Barcelona midfielder was forced off in the first half, with early reports suggesting his season could be over as he’s suffered a torn ACL.

De la Fuente spoke about the injury after the match and said the dressing room were devastated after the final whistle.

“It is the most bitter victory of my entire career and that of all of us who work with this group. We are devastated, in the locker room it seemed like we had lost,” he said.

“We are going to wait for the tests to confirm or not the severity of the injury. We are worried but Gavi now has to be calm. He is going to Barcelona and they will do tests there. Let it be as little as possible.”

Barcelona are said to be furious with De la Fuente after seeing Gavi pick up his injury.

The Catalans are frustrated that the Spain boss chose not to rotate the midfielder for a game that was essentially a dead rubber as qualification had already been confirmed.
