‘Selfish and immature’ - Barcelona loanee Sergino Dest apologises for USMNT red card

Barcelona defender Sergino Dest has apologized after being sent off for the United States against Trinidad and Tobago.

The full-back, who is currently on loan with PSV, was given his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards in 20 seconds for dissent.

Dest kicked the ball into the stands in frustration at a refereeing decision and then chose to argue with the match official straight afterwards.

The red cards was subsequently issued, with Dest publicly apologizing to his team-mates after the game on social media.

“I want to apologize to my Teammates, Staff, Fans and whole nation for my behaviour it was unacceptable, Selfish and immature I let my team down! It’s something I have to learn from and it won’t happen again!”

USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter was also pretty critical of Dest after the game which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Stars and Stripes, although they won 4-2 on aggregate.

“He apologized to the group. He said it’s not going to happen again. As a team, the players, the staff, we need to hold him accountable because it’s inexcusable. It really is. And we were very firm with our words after the game,” he told reporters.

“He put a number of guys in jeopardy, made a number of guys do a lot of extra work in this weather, and it’s inexcusable.”

Dest’s red card means he picks up the unwanted record of being the first US player to be sent off twice in a calendar year since 1990. He’ll also miss the Nations League semi-finals in March due to suspension.
