Xavi not thinking about resigning as Barcelona manager: “We can still have a great season”

Xavi Hernández is not going down without a fight. The Barcelona first team coach has never faced as much pressure as he is currently facing after two terrible losses against Girona and Royal Antwerp, and with Barça in fourth place in the La Liga table and limping into the Champions League knockout stages there is serious doubt about whether or not the legendary midfielder is still the right man for the job.

Reports are starting to surface about tensions with management and leaders of the dressing room, and it really does feel like we are one more bad result away from Xavi’s job being in serious jeopardy. That is not the ideal scenario ahead of what is always one of the toughest matches in the La Liga calendar, away to Valencia at Mestalla.

But the coach spoke in his pre-match press conference on Friday in a defiant tone, and told the media in no uncertain terms that he still sees himself as the ideal candidate to lead his team out of the crisis and into a successful second half of the season. He also made it clear that the idea of quitting never crossed his mind in the last few days.

“Resigning? No, no, no, no, no. There might be a reset at the end of the season, but right now I remain optimistic and excited. We can still have a great season. I believe in the project, in the players, and I have a great relationship with the president, with Deco and the rest of management. We have been working well together for two years. We are halfway to making Barça great again, and I’m surprised that people are down on us after the first bad moment. Everyone needs to be united: fans, players, coaches, directors. The media is not like that, from what I see. You have to believe in the players and the project, yet you sound the alarm every time something doesn’t go well. We are still playing for everything. We were at a worse point this time last season and we still did something great. We have to be positive.”
