Deportivo Alavés upset Celta Vigo, advance to Copa del Rey Final against Barcelona

Surprise!!!

We all know and celebrated Barcelona advancing to the Copa del Rey Final after defeating Atlético Madrid 3-2 on aggregate, but we still needed to find out who the opponent would be in the title decider.

Two La Liga teams, Celta Vigo and Deportivo Alavés were fighting for a spot in the final and drew 0-0 last week at the Balaídos, Celta's home stadium. They faced off on Wednesday night at the Mendizorroza, Alavés' home in the Basque Country, and there was a surprised prepared for all of us.

The match was uneventful with very few chances for both sides, but there was a feeling that Celta, the team that knocked out Real Madrid with a win at the Santiago Bernabéu, would eventually confirm their status as favorites and score the winner to move on and face Barça.

Little did they know that Alavés forward Édgar Méndez had other plans, and he scored a very nice goal with ten minutes left:

That was enough to win the game for El Glorioso, and Alavés pulled off an amazing upset and will play against the Blaugrana in the Final. The two will face off on Saturday, May 27th.

Congratulations, Alavés!
