A different league is not entirely out of the question

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has said the club would have to consider in which league they would play, if Catalonia were to gain independence from Spain.

The club played Sunday’s match with Las Palmas behind closed doors after clashes between police and voters during political unrest in the city.

Sunday’s independence referendum, deemed illegal by Spain, saw 90% of voters vote in favour of independence, according to preliminary reports.

Bartomeu spoke about the possible implications independence may have on the club, and said Barca may have to decide where they want to play.

"In the case of independence, the club and the members would have to decide in which league we would play," he said.

"We are going through difficult and complicated moments and with respect to what could happen in the future we will take it on with calm and wisdom."

Catalan sports minister Gerard Figueras also discussed the same issue last week and said Barca could play in the Premier League, Italy or France, as well as La Liga.

For now though we will have to wait and see what happens in Barcelona and how it will affect the club.
