Ernesto Valverde seemed pretty pleased with Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Villarreal on Sunday night.

It was a tough game that only really opened up after Dani Rabi was sent off for a reckless challenge on Sergio Busquets.

Goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi then secured the win and Valverde says his side coped with all that was thrown at them.

"[Villarreal] were very well organised and closed up our corridors of attack," he said.

"It was a game where we were questioned, and we answered.

"They have very powerful players who find space and they have good technique to play with the ball, so it's normal that they would cause us problems."

Valverde also said how crucial it was for Barca to win, following victories for Valencia, Real Madrid and Atletico ahead of the game.

"The victory is important. Our rivals in the league all won and the need to win ourselves was evident.

“Villarreal played well, looked for the counter, but we knew how to compete and match their attacks. We have a style of play that conditions how the opponent plays. Villarreal always want the ball, from the start, but they took a step backwards.

“We wanted the ball and our finishing was good. We sent a lot of people forward and we put away the first goal."

It was another victory that keeps Barca five points clear with just two games left to play now before the end of the year.
