Carles Alena has defended Lionel Messi after Diego Maradona had a pop at the Barcelona captain and said he couldn’t be considered a leader.

The 20-year-old says his team-mate deserves more respect and that he is seen as a leader in the Barcelona dressing room.

“He wasn’t correct, as there is a need to respect the best player of all time,” he said.

”He has been one of the best, so I think he should control his words a little bit, more than anything because Messi is exemplary in all aspects and he should learn a little from him.

”For me and for all, Messi is the best in history.

”The important thing is what his teammates think and we see him as a leader.”

Alena has been fit and firing for Barcelona B since returning from his injury lay-off, and he’ll be hoping he’s done enough to catch Ernesto Valverde’s eye.
