Ernesto Valverde highlighted Barcelona’s poor start to the game as a main reason for their 4-3 defeat to Real Betis at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

The loss was Barcelona’s first at home in La Liga for over two years, with goals from Junior and Joaquim putting the visitors 2-0 up after 34 minutes.

Valverde reckons his team gave themselves too much to do after shipping two goals to the visitors.

“We didn’t play well in the first half,” he said. “And we just couldn’t work our way back into the game.”

“We’d been on a good run. But we didn’t start this game well at all. There was something generally missing. We upped the intensity in the second half, and managed to create a lot more than we were doing before.”

The defeat is Valverde’s first ever home defeat as Barcelona manager on his 50th La Liga match in charge of the club.
