Gerard Pique has defended Philippe Coutinho after the Brazilian put in another subdued performance for Barcelona.

The Brazilian has found it tough going in his first full season with Barcelona, and Pique says the team need him to find his best form for the business end of the season.

“Philippe is having a good season,” he said. ”Obviously his cost was very high so that means there are more expectations of his performance level.

”It is what it is. We have to accept the reaction of the fans because they are our followers but from the inside we have to give him our support.

”We need him at his best for the end of the season and I’m sure he will be.”

Coutinho played 80 minutes against Rayo Vallecano before being replaced by Ivan Rakitic, but it would be a big surprise if he were to start against Lyon on Wednesday.
