Lionel Messi reckons Ernesto Valverde got his tactics absolutely spot on after inspiring Barcelona to a 4-1 win over Real Betis.

The Barcelona captain hit a hat-trick in another phenomenal display and gave credit to his manager after the match.

“Betis are a side that treat the ball well. But we didn’t suffer at all,” he said.

“We were really well organised. Valverde read things well and prepared the game plan well. Tactically it was perfect. Sometimes you have to adapt to the opposition.

“There are moments and games when that is the case. You have to be prepared for everything.”

Valverde sprung a bit of a surprise with his line-up. He left Philippe Coutinho on the bench, despite Ousmane Dembele being injured, and instead went with a four-man midfield.
