Ernesto Valverde has held his usual pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s final home game of the season against Getafe.

Perhaps unsurprisingly most of the presser was spent with Valverde facing questions about Tuesday’s awful Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

Yet despite watching his team throw away a three-goal lead in Europe for the second year in a row Valverde is confident he still has the “absolute backing” of the club.

“I feel strong, I’m ok and I’m looking forward to taking a step forward, I’m not going to hide behind a wall,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to the president and I have always felt supported by him and he has given me his absolute backing. When something like this happens it seems like everything is falling apart but we know what this world is like.

“Everyone thinks you should burn everything to the ground at moments like this but you have to put things back in their place.”

Valverde remains on course to do a double for the second year in a row, but his achievements at the club have again been completely overshadowed by the team’s failure in Europe.
