Lionel Messi is on international duty with Argentina ahead of the Copa America and has given a pretty interesting interview ahead of the tournament.

The Barcelona captain spoke about how mentally tired he was at the end of a season after defeats to Liverpool and Valencia in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Messi also spoke about how tough it now to win matches due to teams adopting increasingly defensive approaches.

“It’s difficult to win a match nowadays. All the matches are tight, close affairs. Teams put everyone behind the ball and play on the counter. Very few teams come out and play,” he said.

“I finished the season more tired and frustrated mentally than physically after what happened in the last 15 days, especially the Champions League exit. Physically I had to rest, I played less than I did in other years.”

Messi’s words are pretty interesting especially considering he is coming off another prolific season when he ended up as the top scorer in La Liga, across Europe and in the Champions League.
