One of the bright spots on the Barca pitch so far this year has been Pedri González. The Barcelona youngster has gotten plenty of playing time under Ronald Koeman and chances to show his offensive prowess.
In particular, his performance against Juventus was noteworthy. He looked like he belonged in a top European matchup and proved out Koeman’s decision to start him.
Part of his longer term development will be his physicality. The top European leagues have proven to be some of the most demanding and physical football in the world. Part of his growing up will be adjusting to that and becoming more physically imposing and durable.
The fitness coaches at Barcelona have reportedly sent a clear message to Pedri that they wish to make him like Philippe Coutinho. I’m assuming they’re talking about Coutinho’s physical development as he’s aged. It’s important to slowly add on muscle while maintaining that same impressive level of fleet footedness.
Brazil fitness coach Fábio Mahseredjian recently revealed Coutinho put on four kilos of muscle mass during his time on loan with Bayern Munich last season.
