Barcelona captain Lionel Messi praised his team’s “attitude and commitment” after Sunday’s 5-0 La Liga win over Alaves.
Quique Setien’s side produced a much-improved performance to end their 2019-20 league campaign with a morale-boosting win that was full of goals.
Messi once again spoke to the media after the full-time whistle and was far happier with his team than after Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to Osasuna that prompted plenty of criticism from the captain.
“It hasn’t been a great season but we have taken an important step today in terms of attitude and commitment and things can follow on from that. We have to go out with the same attitude as this or maybe even more... we have shown we can change,” he said.
“We need a bit of calm now, in this break. Wipe the slate, and come back for what we have to do. We have said what we had to say, the self-criticism. Now it is about showing that things can change. And today was important step forward in that.”
Barcelona can now have a brief break after a hectic end to the season before regrouping and turning the focus on the Champions League. Napoli are due at the Camp Nou on August 8 with the winners set for a quarter-final against Bayern Munich or Chelsea.
