Barcelona have confirmed that Andres Iniesta will miss Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Sporting at Camp Nou due to injury.

The midfielder was substituted early in the second half of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo, Ernesto Valverde confirming after the game he had asked to be taken off.

The club have now given an update on the 33-year-old’s condition:

“Medical tests carried out have confirmed that FC Barcelona midfielder Andrés Iniesta has muscle fatigue in his left calf and will miss Barça’s next game,” read a statement.

With top spot in the group already confirmed, it’s likely Iniesta would have been rested for Tuesday’s game in any case.

However, Valverde will be hoping he can be fit in time for Sunday’s tricky trip to Villarreal.

Meanwhile, his absence should given Denis Suarez another chance to impress, the 23-year-old replaced Iniesta against Celta and should step in again on Tuesday.
