Lionel Messi has been named the Champions League Player of the Week for his performance in Wednesday’s win over PSV Eindhoven.

The Barcelona captain scored a brilliant first goal and then set up Gerard Pique for the visitors’ second, in a performance that outshone everyone else, according to UEFA.

The game saw Messi score his 106th Champions League goal for Barcelona, making him the all-time top scorer in the competition for a single club.

He didn’t seem to be aware of that until after the match, saying: “I am delighted, I have just found out now. I am happy for this new stat.”

Interestingly, Messi has only played three Champions League games this season, he’s now been named Player of the Week after each appearance.
