Ernesto Valverde faced the press ahead of Barcelona’s clash with Lyon on Tuesday and spoke on a variety of topics.
The Barcelona boss got a little riled about a question on his team’s style, defended Luis Suarez’s recent form and also talked about Samuel Umtiti’s return to fitness.
Valverde on criticism of Barcelona’s style
Everyone will have their own opinion,. The question surprises me. In the odd game we haven’t created chances, but generally we play attacking football.
Valverde on Luis Suarez
When Luis is on the pitch we know he’s going to have chances. More importantly, the opposition know that too.
He came on for 30 minutes [against Valladolid] and could have scored a hat-trick. He is so important because of what he does and what he does for those around him.
Valverde on Samuel Umtiti
He’s not insisted to me to play at all. I’ve not spoken with him about it. He is coming because the medical team have passed him fit. Vermaelen is injured and Umtiti is a great player.
For now, he’s in the 21-man squad, which will have to become 18. Then I have to pick 11, so we will see what happens.
Valverde on Lyon
Lyon are a strong team at home, with great players and are very offensive. The Champions League is tough and difficult, but we’re really up for this game.
It is true that scoring an away goal is important because if you don’t, it leaves everything up in the air for the second leg.
Valverde on away form in the Champions League
It proves how tough the competition is. Records are there to be broken. It was also said that we did not score away from home and this year we have done so in big games against Tottenham and Inter.
