The world is ready for Liverpool to face Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League semifinals. And the matchup that is on everyone’s minds? People want to see the world’s best attacker against what many say is the best defender in the world.

The stats make it clear.

Lionel Messi has been among the players to complete the most dribbles in the top 5 leagues for several seasons now. And he’s among the top 4 this season.

But Virgil van Dijk has an equally impressive record. In fact, according to, he has not been dribbled past in either the English Premier League or the Champions League.

Messi is also leading the race for the European Golden Shoe and the Champions League top scorer awards. On top of that, he is Europe’s top assist provider.

Beyond that, both players are receiving accolades for their play in every facet. Messi, of course, has been the best player in the world for a long time now. Van Dijk has been considered among the best defenders around for a bit, but this season, he is reaching an even higher level. He is seen as a favorite to win the PFA Player of the Year award for the best player in the Premiership.

There will be plenty of other stars around when the Catalans face the Reds, but clearly, the matchup that is making fans salivate the most is this one.
