Barcelona were busy humiliating Manchester United at Wembley on this day nine years ago to lift the European Cup for the fourth time in their history.

Pep Guardiola’s side put on a masterclass to blow the Red Devils away and seal their place as the champions of Europe.

Xavi slipped Pedro in to fire Barcelona in front just before the half-hour mark, although Wayne Rooney managed to level for United seven minutes later.

Yet Barca ran away with it in the second half. Lionel Messi rifled them back in front with a low shot before David Villa found the top corner from the edge of the box.

Sir Alex Ferguson has since said “no one has given us a hiding like that,” while defender Rio Ferdinand says Messi “took liberties” and left him feeling embarrassed. They’re not wrong.
