Barcelona will face reigning Italian champions Napoli in the Champions League Round of 16 after the draw was made on Monday in UEFA’s headquarters. Napoli finished second to Real Madrid in Group C, and now get another Spanish giant in their European journey this season.
This has been a strange season for Napoli, who lost manager Luciano Spaletti over the summer after a historic campaign in their Serie A title in 2022-23, and the club from Naples have struggled to replace his charismatic presence and tactical acumen.
They began the year with Rudi Garcia at the helm but quickly moved on after a dreadful start to the season, with veteran Italian manager Walter Mazzarri taking over last month and guaranteeing qualification to the Champions League knockouts.
Napoli currently sit fifth in the Serie A standings and hope to have a strong second half to the season, and have a whole lot of talent in the squad headlined by striker Victor Osimhen and winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
This is definitely not the toughest draw Barça could have gotten, but a lot can change between now and the first leg in mid-February. Napoli could be much better by then, but that could be the case for the Blaugrana too despite their mighty struggles in the last few weeks.
It’s a fascinating draw nonetheless, and it gives some hope that Barça could reach the quarterfinals if they can find a way to play well again.
Here are the full results of the Champions League Round of 16 draw, with the first legs set for 13/14/20/21 February and the return matches scheduled for 5/6/12/13 March, with the eight group winners playing the decisive seconds legs at home.
