Matthijs de Ligt’s agent has been talking about the defender’s future in the wake of huge speculation that Barcelona are interested in his services.

Recent reports in Spain have claimed that De Ligt is a big target for the club and is seen as the perfect replacement for Gerard Pique.

Mundo Deportivo reported over the weekend that Barca were even keen to bring in De Ligt in January, but that does not look likely at all.

"The intention is to stay at Ajax at least until summer," he told Ziggo Sport.

"He signed a new contract in Amsterdam in August 2017. He is fixed until the summer of 2021."

January is a tricky month to bring in players in any case but it does look as though Barca will be on the lookout for defenders to bring in during the summer.

Javier Mascherano has hinted recently that this may well be his last season at the club while Thomas Vermaelen is also expected to depart in search of regular football.
