Thiago has been talking about why he decided to leave Barcelona in 2013 and says he simply wanted to play regularly.

The midfielder left the Camp Nou for Bayern and, talking to Cadena SER’s radio programme El Larguero, he says playing is more important than winning trophies.

“I have always wanted to play and since that wasn’t possible with Barça I had to leave to find the joy in playing football again. To me playing is more important than winning a trophy, in the end you always ask yourself ‘To what extent I have contributed to the win?’.

“I will always be grateful to Barcelona, but I left because I didn’t want to be just one of the many. We, the player that were in the cantera, always had the dream to reach the first team and, once we get there, we want to play and know that we can become regulars.

“When that’s not possible, it’s the moment you should leave. That’s what I did, leaving Barcelona was my decision. Returning to the Blaugrana? I am only focused on the current season, I am not thinking beyond that. The comparisons with Xavi and Iniesta? I never liked being compared to them, because they are incomparable”.

Thiago was linked with a return to Barcelona over the summer even though he signed a new deal at Bayern in 2017 designed to keep him at the club until 2021.

He’s featured in all of Bayern’s Bundesliga games so far this season, but it’s been a tough start for Niko Kovac’s team who are sixth in the table going into the international break.
