Barcelona have begun negotiations to bring over Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax. The centre-back would be the filler that Barcelona have been long looking for in their defensive core. At 19-years-old, de Ligt would be a great player to sit under Gerard Pique and the rest of Barcelona’s veteran team to get familiar with life at the Camp Nou.

There are a few other teams that are interested in the services of de Ligt. Those teams include Tottenham and Manchester City, which only City have a history of spending top dollar on youngsters.

The club needs some cover for Gerard Pique in case of injury or suspension, and de Ligt fits the bill. De Ligt would likely cost around €70 million, so they would need to be sure he’s the man for the job.

Ajax currently hold the rights to De Ligt till June 2021, so their negotiation position is quite strong.
