The latest instalment in the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga has taken another turn, with a report in the UK claiming Manchester City are set to win the race for his signature.

According to the Mirror, Pep Guardiola’s side are “close to sealing a £61 million deal” for the talented 21-year-old.

The report reckons De Jong wants to play for Guardiola, as he’s impressed with the way young players improve under the City boss.

Meanwhile, the Premier League champions want to bring in a replacement for Fernandinho, who turns 34 next year, and think De Jong is the perfect player.

The report also claims that Barcelona and Tottenham “have accepted” that they will miss out on De Jong.

Barcelona have been linked with De Jong for some time now, and it does look as if he will be on the move in the summer.

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has spoken about how difficult it will be for the club to keep their top stars, the only question now seems to be where they will end up.
