Matthijs de Ligt says he’s similar to Gerard Pique

Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has been talking about how similar he is to Gerard Pique and also about how Ajax play football just like Barcelona.

The 19-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Camp Nou at the end of the season, and his latest comments will do little to stop speculation flying about.

“I am similar to him [Pique],” he said. ”I like to carry the ball out from the back.

”Defensively I am strong and, like Gerard, I also started as a midfielder.

“Ajax’s style of play is similar to Barcelona’s. High press, a high defensive line and a high level of ball possession.”

Sport reported on Friday that Barcelona are set to meet Mino Raiola, De Ligt’s agent to discuss a transfer. The champions are said to be “in a hurry” to complete a deal because of Samuel Umtiti’s injury problems.
